School Food: How to support schools and food providers to meet the regulations (England)

In partnership with the School Food Trust, Nutrition and Wellbeing are running a 1 day CPD course for Nutritionists and Dietitians, School Food: How to support schools and food providers to meet the regulations (England).

A successful pilot of this one-day continuing professional development (CPD) programme has led to the development  of  this course, which is designed to make sure dietitians and nutritionists are fully equipped to help schools with the legislation. The central aim of the course is to give dietitians and registered nutritionists learning experiences that they can apply immediately to their work in schools.

The workshops, which are a major part of the programme, are designed to be very practical. Learners’ are given three ‘real life’ scenarios based in a primary, secondary and a special school. Typical menus from each type of school category are used through the day. Participants work in groups to undertake an assessment of the menu for its compliance with the food-based standards for food other than lunch, the final food-based standards for lunch and the nutrient-based standards for school lunches. They consider factors including the provision mix, recipe substitution and recipe modification. Once the assessment is complete, learners  develop an action plan for each type of school based on the knowledge and experience they have gained.

All delegates taking part in the pilot programme ‘How to support schools and food providers to meet the School Food Regulations (England)’ said they would recommend the course to others. The School Food Trust and Nutrition and Wellbeing Limited are now offering this BDA endorsed training  in London and Newcastle.
